Chris heads to Banff Center for a composition residency at The Leighton Artist Colony.2010-03-03
I'm heading into the woods on May 1st for a few weeks! Rather than a backpack and trekking poles, this time I'll be staying in my very own cabin on the the side of a mountain, complete with grand piano, bears dressed in tuxedos, and moose (or is it meese). Anway, I'm excited that I was chosen to participate in a residency at The Leighton Artists Colony located on the grounds of the famed Banff Center for the Performing Arts, just outside Calgary Alberta, Canada (my home town). Just me, new music, and the bears. Can't wait.
Before I get all Grizzly Adams, I'll be doing a clinic/concert the day before in Calgary. It'll be presented in conjuntion with The Cantos Music Foundation, ChrisTarry.com, Markbass, and a few others. It should be fun. At this point it's taking place on April 30th. I'll update the site when everything becomes official.
Things here in NYC have been going good. Just got back from a weekend with The Sandro Dominelli Trio. We played a CD release weekend in Edmonton for his new album "The Alvo Sessions". It's a great band, Sandro on drums, me on bass, and the great Rez Abbasi on guitar. We're doing a big summer tour of Canada, check out the "gigs" section for all the details.
I've been writing a lot of new short stories lately, a few new pieces are being published in the coming months, I'll keep you posted on when and where those happen. The novel is back in full swing with a coming re-write (the 5th) and another push to publishers. My agent Erin Cox totally rocks, and you CT fans out there, I promise, you will see this book one day. Unless I get eaten by a bear in Banff, then, well, I can't help you.
Thats about all the news that's fit to print. Hope everyone out there is doin great!

Colombia & Sam Yahel/Steely Dan Tour2009-11-10Hey there from the road! I'm in Cincinnati posting this update while on tour with the great organ player Sam Yahel. We're opeing for Steely Dan for a week and having a blast! Cincinnati is cool, I think, I haven't left the hotel yet as we got in late last night.
Lots of travel on this leg of the tour, but we're having a lot of fun! Sam's band sounds great, he's a wonderful player and his tunes are very cool. It's a trio, just bass, organ, and drums. Joe Strasser is on the kit and he sounds terrific! It's amazing to hang back stage and watch Steely play all the hits, Ketih Carlock on the drum chair is somethin' else!
I flew to join the Steely tour in Chicago straight from a week in Bogota, Colombia with Vinnie Valentino, Tom Coster, Joel Rosenblatt, and Chrissi Poland. We had a terrific time playing various concerts/clinics, and teaching at the Fernando Sol school of music. What a wonderful country. A big shout out to all the fabulous students down there!
Ok, time to vernture out side the hotel to see what Cincinnati has to offer on a Tuesday afternoon.
Hope everyone is well!

CT Update2009-10-05Hey Everyone, just a quick update on all things CT.
Yes, I did it! I hiked the John Muir Trail out in California! Running 211 miles and 50,000 vertical feet from Yosemitte National park, to Mount Whitney, the John Muir Trail is one of America's most beautiful and tough hiking trails.
As some of you may remember I attempted the hike last year and injured myself four days in. Well, my hiking partner Jon Hartsel and I made a second attempt on the beastly Muir Trail again this year, and I'm happy to say, it was spectacular and a total success. Adding the four days we did last year, we completed the trail in a total of thirteen days. I can blab on-and-on about it here but the best way to experience it is through Jon's amazing pictures! Do yourself a favor, click this link!
I've been busy in the studio with some fine folks over the past few months. I just had the honor of playing on my good friend Sandro Dominelli's album featuring the fantabulous guitarist Rez Abbasi. It turned out great and we had a total blast! Watch for this trio to be touring soon promoting this album, I'll keep ya posted.
My novel, The Wedding King of Vermont has been going full guns, pushing ahead into the unknown! My super amazing agent Erin Cox has been kicking ass and I'm so thankful each and every day for the love and support she's shown for me and my book!
Special thanks to the help of my good friends and internet guru's over at Art Gig Studio's, who helped me launch a very hip website for the book over at WeddingKingofVermont.com. The book is in the process of finding a publisher so the site is currently only available to editors interested in learning more about the book and its platform. If you're in the book business, or, know someone who is, drop me a line. I'll hook you up Erin and my vast team of book people and we'll get you a password for the site so you can find out more about the novel.
My home studio has been busy lately with a lot of remote bass track work. People send me their demos or album projects and I record bass tracks for them and send them back all through the miracle that is the internet. It's been really great and I've had the pleasure of playing on some really cool stuff! I've also been hired to produce a few fantastic jazz albums, which, is a great honor for me. I'll keep you posted on these projects as they see the light of day.
There's some cool things coming up! I'm off to Columbia for a week in November with the wonderful guitarist and friend Vinny Valentino. He's taking myself, drummer Joel Rosenblatt, vocalist Chrissi Poland, and keyboardist Tom Coster to Bogota for a week of teaching and concerts.
I'm taking the band to Vancouver for two nights at the Cellar Jazz Club on November 27th & 28th. I hope to see all my old Vancouver peeps there. A lot more in the gigs section.
As well, be sure to check out the infomation below on the cool New York Bass Immersion day coming up next week Oct 11th!
Well, thats it for now. I hope everyone out there is doing great. Take care, and keep your stick on the ice.

UPDATE2009-08-03
Hey out there in CT.com land. Lots has been going on here in Brooklyn. I'm off for a few weeks vacation next week to finish up the hike that I injured myself on last year, the John Muir Trial in California. I'll be starting about halfway, at Vermillion Valley Resort (where I came out last year) and heading south to Mt. Whitney. I'm excited to get back out in the woods! It's my favorite place to think about music, writing, and hamburgers.
On the music front things have been good. I'm currently composing all the fictional music that's found in my novel "The Wedding King of Vermont." Readers will be able to listen and download an album of the music by the fictional bands found in the book, making them feel that the music existed all along. All the musicians on the recording will be appearing as the fictional band members from the novel as well. Currently the recording dates for the sessions are set for early September so I have to get my ass in gear and finish writing the songs.
On the book front, my super fab literary agent Erin Cox has been kicking ass and I hope to have more info on the novel soon. I've been getting a lot of questions about it and can't wait to fill you all in. Patience grasshopper, patience.
I'm also exited that I've been invited to spend time in Banff, Canada next summer at the world famous Leighton Artists Colony composing music for a large ensemble album.
Take a look at the cabin I get to spend time composing in! Wow!
Well, that's it for now. I hope everyone's well, keep the emails and questions coming.
Take care,
CT

Update2008-09-10
Hey Everyone,
First of all thanks to all the fans who came out the the Chris Tarry Group gig at Joe's Pub in August and the 55 bar the other night. What a turnout both times! I was blown away, thank-you.
It's been awhile since I wrote a short update about all that's been going on. Well, as this site is pretty much an extention of that, aside from the hiking, the injuries (hiking), the crazy travel for various gigs (Africa, China, India, Peru, Europe, ect) there's not much need for an update, here, however, are a few quick little items.
A few new albums to watch for. The first to hit the streets will probably be Adam Klipple's Drive by Leslie album featuring Adam and his cool organ influenced tunes, Keith Carlock on drums, Seamus Blake on sax, Brad Shepic on guitar, and myself on bass. Just heard some of the final mixes and they sound great!
Just got out of the studio last week playing on the great piano player Daniel Kelly's latest album. It's piano trio featuring Daniel, his great tunes, Jordan Perlson on drums and myself on electric bass. It sounds great!
What else.. Oh yeah, Michelle and I have been in the middle of buying a condo here in New York. It's been major stress but it seems like we're finally at the end of the process. We're moving a little further into Williamsburg Brooklyn on Sept 18th.
Ok, that's pretty much it for now. Talk to ya later!

Bass Player Magazine Review (Feb 2008)2008-01-17Just got a great review of the new album "Almost Certainly Dreaming" in this months issue of Bass Player Magazine!. Thanks to Chris Jisi for the terrific review!
Brooklyn-based Chris Tarry may be in a bigger pond than his native Western Canada, but the transplanted bassist/composer is still a big fish, musically. His eight and perhaps best CD stresses his ensemble writing, from the brisk bopper "An Unlikely UFO" to the swirling samba "Alien Blueprints." Tarry's 5-string gets an extended workout on "Prettiest Town of Goderich," but even cooler is his moody groove solo on the electric-Miles-ish "In the Beginning." - Chris Jisi, Bass Player Magazine |
|
Great review on the new album!2007-12-30"Almost Certainly Dreaming demonstrates rapid growth and increased cohesion for a group that's swiftly forging an identifiable identity defined by inventive writing and playing that, while often visceral, doesn't place style ahead of substance. If they're this good in the studio, let's hope the next step is a live recording..." Check out all of it here! |
